Is it time for a new heating system? We can help…
Fix or Replace?
We understand that boiler or furnace installation is a big decision to make. A new heating system isn’t cheap but it’s something that can last 15 to 20 years and potentially reduce your heating bill by up to 30%. As a rule of thumb, we recommend replacing your system once it exceeds 75% of its life expectancy and repairs would cost more than 30-40% of the cost of a new system.
Mid- or High-Efficiency Furnace: Which Is Best?
One of the biggest questions you will probably ask yourself is, how much should I spend on a new furnace? Is it worth it to get a high-efficiency furnace? If you are replacing an older furnace with a 65% efficiency rating, a mid-efficiency (80-89%) unit can save you 15-20% on heating costs. Upgrading to a high-efficiency system may cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 more but save 25% to 30% on heating costs. Today’s furnaces have new heating technology like variable-speed fans that allow them to run better, use less energy, and keep you warmer.

We usually recommend going with a higher efficiency system one or more of the following apply:
- Your energy costs are high
- You are in a cold area
- You will stay in your home for at least 10 years to recapture the cost of the system
- You can qualify for state and utility rebates to lower your cost
- The payback period is relatively low
To demonstrate how much you can save by investing in a new furnace, imagine your annual heating costs are $2,000 and you are considering upgrading to a model with a 15% bump in the AFUE rating. This would save around $300 every year. If the cost of a high efficiency furnace is $1,500 above a mid-efficiency model, it will take 5 years to pay back the difference. This is definitely worth the cost if you are going to stay in your home for 8 or more years.
If you are struggling with the decision to replace or install a new heating system, our technicians will work with you to choose the best option for you based on the age of your furnace or boiler, how much repairs would cost, and how much money you can save with a new, energy-efficient system.
